101 Tips and Tricks for the iMac and Macintosh Enroll by clicking here Use more Macintosh more efficiently and increase your productivity by learning dozens of tips, tricks, and shortcuts involving the Operating System, Keyboard, Desktop Navigation, the Internet, Editing Text, Fonts, Special characters, Maintenance, Viruses, Keyboards, Monitors, Disks, Sound, and more. This course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your questions. The instructor for this course will be Mac Mandley. Mac Mandley has an M.A. in Educational Technology/Instructional Design, and is finishing his Ph.D. in Education. His consulting business designs and develops educational software, Web sites, and distance education programs for universities, elementary and secondary schools, public service organizations and businesses. Mac has taught Macintosh workshops in the classroom since 1991 and on-line since 1999. All courses run for six weeks, with a two-week grace period at the end. Two lessons are released each week for the six-week duration of the course. You do not have to be present when the lesson is released, but you must complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.
A new section of each course starts on the second or third Wednesday of each month. If enrolling in a series of two or more courses, please be sure to space the start date for each course at least two months apart. | Week One | | Wednesday - Lesson 01 | The designers of the Macintosh did a great job developing the computer interface. The icons are not just nice pictures—they're also full of valuable information. As part of this lesson, you'll learn the meaning of key icons. We'll also look at key shortcuts that can be applied in many situations.
| | Friday - Lesson 02 | Just-in-time learning is based on the concept that information is more relevant to you if it provides solutions to real problems, real questions. As part of this lesson, we'll explore the Help menus that are available with most programs and see how they provide just-in-time learning for those questions that you need to have answered right now.
| | Week Two | | Wednesday - Lesson 03 | If you like shortcuts, this lesson is for you! You'll learn the 14 most common keyboard shortcuts for the desktop. Most can be used in the majority of programs.
| | Friday - Lesson 04 | Have you ever wondered what you could do with a particular icon? Contextual menus give you a list of what you can do with an icon. One of the other topics we'll cover 4 is how to copy and how to duplicate; and we'll take a close look at the difference between the two.
| | Week Three | | Wednesday - Lesson 05 | Having trouble navigating around your computer? In this lesson, we'll begin a study of navigation tricks. You'll also learn some advanced features for Alias, Trash, and Windows.
| | Friday - Lesson 06 | In this lesson, we'll continue our study on navigation tricks. You'll also learn some tricks for editing icon names. Many of these icon-editing tricks also work with word processing programs.
| | Week Four | | Wednesday - Lesson 07 | For this lesson, we'll concentrate on the Internet. We'll look at tips to help you navigate the Web more easily. I'll pass on some tips for speeding up Web viewing, typing shorter URLs, and backing through Web pages.
| | Friday - Lesson 08 | In this lesson, you'll learn several techniques for editing text. We'll also look at some basic design issues to help you create more professional looking documents.
| | Week Five | | Wednesday - Lesson 09 | Fonts will be our main focus in this lesson. I'll also fill you in on some important font background information—it's information that you can use every time you type and that you'll need to know the next time you purchase a printer, software, or font program.
| | Friday - Lesson 10 | Many students say that this is their favorite lesson. Today, you'll learn how to create special characters, such as accent marks, smart quotes, and business symbols. Other topics include using Key Caps and Ornamental fonts (fonts that type pictures instead of characters).
| | Week Six | | Wednesday - Lesson 11 | Today's lesson will be all about maintaining your computer. We'll cover topics ranging from cleaning your computer to fighting viruses.
| | Friday - Lesson 12 | In our final lesson of 101 Tips and Tricks, we'll look at a variety of topics, including keyboards, monitors, disks, sound, and ergonomics.
